What Qualifies As A Multiple Qualifying Event Under COBRA?
1/22/2026
A multiple qualifying event occurs when a second qualifying event happens after an initial qualifying event while COBRA coverage is already in effect, and that second event would have caused a loss of coverage if the first event hadn’t already occurred.
When that happens, COBRA coverage may be extended from 18 months up to a total of 36 months.
Examples of a second qualifying event that extends to 36 months total:
-
While covered under COBRA, the former employee dies, or - The spouse divorces the former employee, or
- The dependent child ages out of eligibility under the plan
Note that the qualified beneficiary must notify the plan administrator of the second event within 60 days (usually in writing).
Examples of what does not qualify as a multiple qualifying event include:
- Disability extension (that’s a different rule, not a multiple qualifying event)
- The second event occurs after the initial COBRA coverage already expired
- The second event does not cause a coverage loss (e.g., employee becomes entitled to Medicare before COBRA starts)
