Running An HR Department Of One

Practical HR Training For Solo HR Professionals And Small Teams!

Managing HR alone means balancing compliance, employee relations, recruiting, payroll, benefits, performance management, and leadership support - often all in the same day. This comprehensive training program is designed specifically for HR professionals who serve as a one-person HR department or work within a very small HR team.

Whether you are new to HR or the employee or owner handling HR responsibilities, this course provides the practical knowledge, tools, and confidence needed to effectively manage the day-to-day and strategic demands of Human Resources.

You will learn how to prioritize competing responsibilities, reduce compliance risk, improve employee communication, and build HR processes that support both employees and organizational goals.

What You Will Learn About Running An HR Department Of One

Taught by industry professionals with years of experience, this training covers the core responsibilities every solo HR professional must understand. Here is some of what you will learn:
  • HR roles, responsibilities, and organizational impact
  • Employment law and compliance essentials
  • Benefits and payroll administration
  • Employee relations and conflict resolution
  • Talent management and hiring best practices
  • Workplace investigations and documentation
  • Communication and leadership skills for HR professionals
  • Risk mitigation and legal “hot spots”
  • Time management and prioritization strategies for overloaded HR teams
  • Practical approaches for building scalable HR processes in smaller organizations
In addition to the lecture portions, this course also includes interactive exercises covering real-world HR scenarios that help you apply what you learn to actual workplace situations. Sneak Peek: Interactive Exercises

While reading about compliance requirements may seem simple, real-life scenarios are often more difficult. This course includes several 'Interactive Exercises' that allow you to practice real-life situations - and give you a chance to get it right before it happens at work!

Below are some of the Interactive Exercises that you and other attendees will work on. Read them carefully, as the correct answers may not be what you initially think!
  • An employee requests two weeks of unpaid leave to care for their seriously ill parent. The employer denies the request, stating that the employee hasn't worked for the company for a full year yet. Legal or Not?
  • An employee is terminated for cause. The employer informs them that due to their termination, they are not eligible for COBRA continuation coverage. Legal or Not?
  • An employee requests two weeks of unpaid leave to care for their seriously ill parent. The employer denies the request, stating that the employee hasn't worked for the company for a full year yet. Legal or Not?
  • A pregnant employee requests a temporary modification to their duties, specifically asking to avoid heavy lifting, due to their pregnancy. Their doctor has provided a note supporting this request. The employer denies the request, stating that all employees must be able to perform all job functions without modification. Legal or Not?
